This is my another creation. I have been a huge fan of Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Famous Five and Tintin since my childhood and those stories inspired me to write something detective! So, here I go, with my character, Miss. Rosalind Savage, a teen girl detective.
“Oh my
gosh!” exclaimed Natalie. “A prom at college sounds great.”
“Yeah, definitely,” smiled Alicia. “What do
you think Rosalind?”
“Hmm,” I
thought for a second. “Prom, huh?”
Proms are usually meant for dancing and prize
giving to the couples who have danced the best. Honestly, I’m no where near
dances. Since my childhood, I’m least interested in dancing.
Once I had been with Maya, my sixth-grade
friend to a ball dance competition and I had stumbled and fell on her very
badly. It was really embarrassing though we were sixth-graders.
“Hello?” Alicia patted my back. “What are you
thinking so much?”
“Oh, sorry,”
I apologized. “Well, I can’t dance. So, I can’t attend the prom.”
“Are you
crazy?” yelled Natalie. “Our college is spending tons of money in this and I
have never been to a prom before. Alicia had been to one at her cousin’s
college where he had taken her. As far as I know, you too, haven’t been to
one.”
“Yeah,” I
sighed. “Even I haven’t been to a prom before but this dancing thing sucks!”
“Oh, come
on,” Alicia held my hand. “You don’t have to dance if you don’t want to. Just
enjoy the party. Eat good food and drink smoothies and milkshakes. What
more do you want?”
“If you say
so,” I stared at her. “I will come.”
“Wow!”
Natalie giggled. “Look, she is ready to attend now.”
“Yep,”
Alicia pinched her. “That’s because of me.”
“Oh, I see,”
Natalie pulled her hair.
“Girls,
enough,” I frowned. “Now, where the heck is that invitation card?”
“Here,”
Natalie pulled it out from her backpack and handed it to me.
It had a rectangular shaped purple envelope,
tied with a golden ribbon. White, bold letters saying “NORTH LAND HIGH PROM”
were engraved in it. I took out the golden, glittery card from it. It had a
usual Italic format of the prom invitation.
“It’s gonna
take place in college gym?” I asked pointing at the venue.
“Yeah, of
course,” Natalie nodded. “Where else could they organize it?”
“Our gym is
kind of gross,” Alicia added.
“Then why
did you say that they are spending tons of money for this?” I asked confusedly.
“They don’t have to rent a restaurant or something for this.”
“Do you know
that the food and drinks will be brought from Waldorf Astoria?” Natalie
frowned.
“Waldorf
Astoria?” I looked at both of them surprisingly.
“Yeah,”
Natalie chuckled. “The most expensive 5-star hotel in New York.”
“Great!” I
placed the card at a side. “But all these ‘tons’ of money will be paid back by
us to them as we have to buy the tickets for entry.”
“Tickets?”
Alicia cried. “How do you know that?”
“Because
it’s written at the bottom of this card,” I took the card and pointed at the
line which was at the bottom with a ‘*’ mark saying: Students must buy their
tickets for the entry at the evening of the prom.
“Uh-huh!”
Natalie whispered. “You have an excellent vision, girl.”
I was sitting with two of my best friends,
Natalie and Alicia in my bedroom. They have come with me directly from college.
We stay near by and so it’s easy for us to hangout and stay at each other’s
place often.
My place is
vacant most of the time as my parents are out for business trips often and my
elder brother, Jason gets his freedom to hangout with his friends whenever our
parents are out.
Natalie
Matthews and Alicia Doyle are my real good friends or BFFs (Best Friends
Forever), as I call them. We are together since childhood. We have been
studying in the same school and now in same college. Even our tuition and
extra curricular activity coaching are the same.
“Now,”
Alicia declared, “We have to choose and get our dresses ready before the main
function.”
“I know,” I
turned towards the digital clock which read 5pm. “If we go now then we can look
up for something.”
“Please girls,”
Natalie cried. “Not today. I am tired after a real hectic day. I had to finish
three History assignments and then helped Camellia with her trig problems. I
can’t go now.”
“Okay,” I
said. “We will go tomorrow then.”
“Yeah,” they
both said together.
“That will
be fine. Tomorrow we don’t have college due to all these mess of decoration.”
Natalie agreed.
“The prom is
on Wednesday, anyways.” Alicia smiled. “And today is Monday.”
“Okay,
that’s decided then. Tomorrow at 5pm, we will go to downtown for shopping.” I
declared finally.
Both my
friends went in their places around 7. Mum and Dad as usual, were at Mexico for
their business trip. Jason, my elder brother was out at the park with his
friends. He returned around 8 and then we watched TV till 9.30.
“Hey,” he
said finally. “I am hungry. What do we have tonight?”
“Dude,” I
chuckled. “We have to eat Spinach and Broccoli tonight, your favorite food.”
“Eew!” he
shrieked. “I don’t wanna eat it then. I will get our dinner from Pretzel’s.”
Pretzel’s is
our all-time favorite restaurant cum Café. Its owner Mr. Rick Joy is a cheerful
man who is a friend of Dad’s. He knows us pretty well and as we are his regular
customers, we do get discounts on food and drinks.
We had pasta
and soda for dinner. I had to wash the dishes after that as it was my turn
today. As usual, after dinner, Jason sat in front of TV. This was his time to
watch sports. But tonight he just sat on couch, changing channel after channel.
“Will you
stop changing channels like that and watch something good?” I frowned as I sat
beside him on the couch.
“Hey, wait,”
he stopped me. “I wanna watch the basketball game of NL tonight. What the hell?
Where did it go?”
“It on 87,”
I sighed.
“Oh,
thanks,” he finally pressed the buttons and found the sports channel which
played the basketball finals of NL and Nashville Champs (NC).
“Since when
are you interested in basketball?” I asked. Jason was most interested in football
than in any other game. I knew that very well.
He shrugged.
“I usually don’t watch basketball,” he admitted, “But since last two weeks I
have become a big basketball lover, you know.”
“Oh, I can
see that,” I laughed.
“Do you know
this Laurent McCartney?” he asked.
“Yep,” I
nodded. “As far as I know, he is the captain of NL basketball team. What’s with
him?”
“Well,” he
said, watching the game with concentration. “You are some what wrong, I would
say. He was the captain of the team
and now Ronald Santiago is in his place.”
“Santiago?”
I asked staring at the giant screen.
“Yep,” he
smiled. “He’s the elder brother of Norman Santiago, your classmate.”
“Hmm,” I
thought. I remembered the tall, skinny guy from my class who never spoke to
other students much. He was intelligent and used to be the second boy of class.
Students teased him calling a “nerd”. “His big brother is the captain now?”
“Yep,” he
nodded. “Ronald is in my class, actually.”
“Oh,” I eyed
him once and looked at the screen. “Hey, that’s Norman, Ronald’s brother.”
I pointed
towards the pavilion which was full of spectators raising posters of NL or NC.
On the first row, there was a skinny guy with red shirt. He was cheering for
his brother.
“Yeah,
naturally,” he answered. “It’s his brother’s team and so he has come.”
“I guess
that guy who is dribbling the ball right now is Ronald.” I pointed at the guy
who had the same face like Norman. Only, this guy was much taller and
healthier. “But why was Laurent replaced?”
“Yep, that’s
Ronald,” Jason yawned. “Now, it is a long story. I will narrate it to you
tomorrow. Go to sleep now, Madam. No more questions.”
“Come on,” I
poked him in his ribs.
“Hey,” he
pushed my hand away. “It hurts. Go and sleep, please.”
I was
feeling sleepy, too so I went in my bedroom and layed on bed. Then I drifted to
sleep.
